Was Ryan Giggs over rated?

First of all let me say Ryan Giggs is a legend, no doubt about that but if we look closer into his stats per season was he over rated due to Manchester United bias?

Let’s starting looking at his stats, he does own the Premier League record for assists with 162, this does come over a 21 year career. If we break this down per season it only averages 7.7 assists per season. Not very impressive for a left midfielder. Let’s compare with another player who has played 19 seasons in the Premier League Frank Lampard the now Chelsea manager. In 19 seasons he assisted on 102 goals which breaks down to 5.3 assists per season.

Moving onto goals, in only 2 seasons Ryan Giggs had double digit goal scoring seasons. These came in the 93/94 season where he scored 13 goals and the 95/96 season where he scored 11 goals. Let’s once again break this down and compare, Giggs scored an average of 5.2 goals a season through 21 seasons, this compared to Frank Lampard who scored 177 goals in his premier league career this averages to 9.3 goals a season.

After looking at these stats I can see why people would say Ryan Giggs is overrated. In my opinion any player who holders the record for most assists in a league and score over 100 goals in that league can never be called overrated, yes he may get the Manchester United bias but again he won trophies and without his influence and play on the field, I feel United wouldn’t of been as successful without him!
